This is the story of my recent trip to a conference on Innovation in Community Engagement in Perth, Australia. Due to the innovative, comprehensive nature of this conference, I have done a fairly thorough review, highlighting certain parts so you can scan it quickly if you like. I have also provided many links for those who would value more in-depth exploration.
Halfway around the planet from my home in Oregon lies Western Australia, where THE GOVERNMENT has been sponsoring remarkable innovations in community engagement and deliberative democracy for four and a half years. (Oh, how I wish it were happening in the U.S.!!)
At the forefront of this committed experiment in democratic collective intelligence are two remarkable politicians eager to move beyond cynicism and distrust -- Western Australia's Premier, Dr. Geoff Gallop, and his Minister of Planning and Infrastructure, Alannah MacTiernan. Behind the scenes, designing and organizing it all, has been my heartful, down-to-earth, brilliantly hyperactive Perth host -- one of the most creative, visionary process organizers I know -- Dr. Janette Hartz-Karp.

A number of people have asked about the chart I drew at the Evolutionary Salon which I described in my May 22 blog entry, Growing Together at the Emerging Edge of Evolution. Peggy Holman has sent me photos of it, as well as another key graphic that emerged from that dialogue. I've pasted them below, with a detailed description of the former. (Also note that the Evolutionary Salon page now has photographs from the Salon, as well as more photos and bios of Salon participants.)

The citizens of British Columbia have voted May 17th on the recommendations made by last year's Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform -- one of the most remarkable initiatives in deliberative democracy I've seen. (I promoted it in my article Using Citizen Deliberative Councils to Make Democracy More Potent and Awake) 57% of the population were in favor of the Citizens Assembly's innovative "single transferable vote" idea (a combination of instant runoff voting and proportional representation) -- and it was approved by a majority in 77 of 79 legislative districts. However, the legislation establishing the Citizens Assembly required a 60% supermajority. So now the debate begins over whether the majority should rule or not! Here are the vote tallies and an article from the Vancouver Sun. Personally I'm disappointed and surprised that this referendum did not win more resoundingly. I would love to know more about the media debate and advertising campaigns that preceded the elections. If you have more information, please post a comment.

National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation convenor Sandy Heierbacher just sent me a notice about the Initiative on Nanotechnology and Society at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which conducted a citizens' consensus conference on Nanotechnology during April and has just posted a report with citizen recommendations.
I think of citizens' consensus conferences as one of the most sophisticated forms of citizen deliberation. They are an official function of Parliament in Denmark, organized by the Danish Board of Technology. Only a few have been held in the U.S., and not always according to the specific Danish technique, which I think is unfortunate. That was the case here, as well:
